Unfolding Decomposition is a series of nine ceramic vessels.
Over several months, I continuously shaped a block of clay with my entire body, its weight equal to my own.
To document the process, I made plaster casts of the clay, capturing the subtle changes imprinted by repeated physical contact. Each cast served as a snapshot in time, preserving the evolving form of the material.
In the final stage, I used these plaster molds (negatives) to create ceramic sculptures (positives). Each sculpture being a different moment in the clay’s transformation.
Unfolding Decomposition explores the mutual imprinting of self and world and the act of recognizing oneself in the other, here in clay, as a foundation for empathy and compassion. It speaks to the potential inherent in all beings and things, a potential that can only unfold under the right conditions.
With this in mind, I am wondering: How can we create environments for and with one another that allow us to grow, thrive, and evolve—even in times of great challenge, when the right conditions seem absent?
Unfolding decomposition was first exhibited at Weserburg, Museum für moderne Kunst Bremen in September 2022 as the final project in my BA studies at University of the Arts Bremen. I could exhibit the work again in June 2024 at Eins und Viele Galerie in Berlin.
